Vitamin
C
Vitamin C is well known for its ability to prevent and treat scurvy,
a disease that causes swollen and bleeding gums, aching bones and
muscles and in some cases even death. Connective tissues throughout
the body are made of collagen, which depends on Vitamin C for its
production. In this role, Vitamin C helps heal wounds, burns, bruises,
and broken bones. As a powerful antioxidant and immune system booster,
Vitamin C may alleviate the pain of rheumatoid arthritis, protect
against atherosclerosis and heart disease, and help prevent some
forms of cancer, and has the potential to prevent the common cold.
More than the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) may be needed under
conditions of physical or emotional stress.
- Vitamin
C in combination with bioflavonoids was found to help clear
up blood clots in leg veins.
- Vitamin
C helps alleviate some symptoms of hypertension-high blood pressure-when
taken routinely.
- Vitamin
C may help prevent heart disease by helping prevent plaque in
arteries.
- Vitamin
C has been found to prevent some of the more ravaging effects
of chemotherapy, cigarette smoking, and alcohol consumption.
- Vitamin
C has been shown to lower the incidence of a precancerous condition
in women called cervical dysplasia.
