Hesperidin
is one of the bioflavinoids, naturally occurring nutrients usually
found in association with Vitamin C. Some symptoms originally thought
to be due to Vitamin C deficiency such as bruising due to capillary
fragility were found in early studies to be relieved by crude vitamin
C extract but not by purified Vitamin C. The bioflavinoids, sometimes
called Vitamin P, were found to be the essential component in correcting
this bruising tendency and improving the permeability and integrity
of the capillary lining. These bioflavinoids include Hesperidin,
Citrin, Rutin, Flavones, Flavonals, Calechin, and Quercetin.
Hesperidin
deficiency has been linked with abnormal capillary leakiness as
well as pain in the extremeities causing achi-ness, weakness, and
night leg cramps. Supplemental hesperidin may also help reduce edema
or excess swelling in the legs due to fluid accumulation. Like other
bioflavinoids, hesperidin works best when given with Vitamin C and
other bioflavinoids. No signs of toxicity have been observed with
normal intake of hesperidin.
