What is Coenzyme Q10 and Why is it so Important?
Coenzyme Q10 (also known as CoQ10) is a compound that is made naturally in the body. The Q and the 10 in coenzyme Q10 refer to parts of the compound's chemical structure. CoQ10 is found in most body tissues. The highest amounts are found in the heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas. Coenzyme Q10 is used by cells to produce energy needed for cell growth and maintenance. CoQ10 is also used by the body as an antioxidant. An antioxidant is a substance that protects the cells from chemicals called free radicals. Free radicals are highly reactive chemicals that can damage important parts of cells, including cell DNA. This damage may play a role in the development of cancer. Tissue levels of coenzyme Q10 decrease as we get older.
An Energy Producer
Coenzyme Q10's function can be compared to a spark plug in a car engine. Just as the spark plug provides an initial spark to start the engine, CoQ10 jump starts energy production within cells. The body uses the generated energy to operate all of its vital processes, including muscle contraction and digestion.
Researchers at the University of Wisconsin first discovered CoQ10 in 1957. Examining how the cell produces energy, Professor F.L. Crane and his colleagues came across CoQ10. Since then, scientists have found evidence that CoQ10 supplements may provide significant assistance in the prevention and treatment of a number of health disorders, especially cardiovascular disease and cancer.
What is the link between Coenzyme Q10 and Statins?
Coenzyme Q10 research has shown that cholesterol lowering drugs, known as Statins, can actually decrease the body's supply of CoQ10. These drugs act to inhibit the enzymes that are involved in cholesterol production, which takes place in the liver. However, they also inhibit the production of our body's natural CoQ10 in the process! While these drugs (examples: Lipitor, Pravachol, etc.) can help decrease cholesterol in the body, they are also depleting the important supply of CoQ10 that our bodies need.
Preventing Heart Disease
In one of the first steps in the development of atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, free-floating oxygen molecules attack LDL cholesterol ("bad" cholesterol) in the blood. The result is a reactive type of LDL cholesterol that can damage the lining of arteries. As an antioxidant, CoQ10 prevents LDL cholesterol from being attacked. CoQ10 has also been found to work in conjunction with vitamin E to prevent the damage that leads to heart disease.
May Ease Symptoms of Early-Stage Parkinson's Disease
Results of the first placebo-controlled, clinical trial of the compound CoQ10 suggest that it can slow disease progression in patients with early-stage Parkinson's Disease. While the results must be confirmed in a larger study they provide hope that this compound may ultimately provide a new way to treat Parkinson's Disease. This trial suggested that coenzyme Q10 can slow the deterioration in Parkinson's Disease, says Dr. Clifford Shults, M.D., of the University of California , San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine .
May aid in Conventional Cancer Therapy
Other studies have been conducted using coenzyme Q10 as a dietary supplement in patients undergoing conventional cancer treatment. In these studies, the researchers explored the potential use of coenzyme Q10 as an additional therapy for cancer. There have also been anecdotal reports that coenzyme Q10 has increased the survival of patients with cancers of the pancreas, lung, colon, rectum and prostate.

CoQ10 may also help to improve the symptoms of diabetes, periodontal disease, immune deficiency, cancer and muscular dystrophy. Some people use CoQ10 as a weight-loss aid while some athletes use the supplement as a performance-enhancer.
Since the response of CoQ10 can take time, getting results may take more than eight weeks.
